Many thanks to everyone who came out to join us Thursday evening for our reception honoring America’s Unsung Heroes. Much gratitude goes out to LaKendra McNair of TD Bank, the sponsorers of the event. The night was a fun-filled salute to African American vets and was represented by various sectors of the military including Tuskegee Airmen, the Rangers, the 555th Parachute Association and the Montford Marines. DC broadcast journalism veteran and Double Nickels board member J.C. Hayward was our lovely mistress of ceremonies.

The evening was truly special. And, it was such an honor to be in the presence of these Unsung Heroes, hearing bits of their stories, chatting and laughing with them, and feeling the strength of their bonds and camaraderie. The room was warmed by their loving interactions, humility, friendly banter, and deserved pride in their historical accomplishments. I could have stayed and listened and learned for hours more, and as I spoke with two of the honorees, I wondered how many people in their own neighborhoods—particularly young people—have any idea that these national treasures are within easy reach. We simply must continue to provide opportunities for the telling of their stories, for honoring them publicly and privately, and for celebrating their accomplishments.

Dicey, thanks for the feedback. I'm looking forward to the stories that come from our Armed Forces Soldiers Home project. These are indeed stories that need to be preserved for our youth and future generations.
