Double Nickels Receives Service Award from the Armed Forces Retirement Home
Since 2008, the Double Nickels Theatre Company has celebrated the lives of the veterans living at the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Northwest Washington. Dr. Carol Singleton, the retired head of Howard University theater department and a volunteer with the Double Nickels was the producer of our first original performance, “Do You Remember”. We subsequently partnered with the Washington National Opera and celebrated by having the veterans stories performed in song by the Opera Company. Another fine performance was having the residents build the sets, write their stories and act out their own experiences from the 2011 earthquake that struck our city. We have published two books of the stories of the veterans’ experiences. We now are writing eBooks with the residents, have started a bowling league and established the “SpeakEasy Culture Club” which is lead by the residents.
On September 7, 2012 the AFRH held an appreciation event for all the volunteers who contribute their time to the veterans living there. It was this occasion that the Director, David Watkins presented our Founder, Antoinette Ford with a beautifully designed walnut plaque engraved with an inscription expressing sincere appreciation for our support and interest in the quality of life of our veterans. In addition, the Double Nickels volunteers who were at the event were presented with Certificates of Appreciation for their time and commitment to the Armed Forces Retirement Home.
We love what we do and it is a special honor to have our efforts acknowledged by the ones we serve.
