A Veteran Usher’s Story by Lionell Thomas

I can’t stand weddings.  I don’t like them at all – a whole lot of formality for show.  They are supposed to be a happy occasion, but the last wedding I went to was a fiasco.  It literally changed my whole perception about weddings.

It was between two people (a man and a woman) who had gotten together just to prove the family wrong.  What a big mistake that was.  If that was not a sign, I don’t know what was.

The day of the wedding of the groom-to-be’s mother was determined to go to any length stop the wedding at all cost.  She had been trying to sabotage the whole thing all along.  The mother went so far as to let everyone know who would listen about the bride’s storied past.  And if that was not enough, she even sent our emails and letters everyone she knew.  In her mind, she could let her “onliest” son marry a woman that had been less than pure all her life and had been caught cheating on him numerous times.  Yep, she was determined from the start that the wedding was not to be — even down to the “opening ceremony.”

On the day of the wedding, she showed up at the church and performed.  There in front of all the guests, the “momma” laid down in the entrance of the church as the guest arrived.  She was kicking and screaming as you please with all her business showing and you know what I mean.  The mother was pouring her heart out to the top of her lungs that she was not going to let this wedding go on.  Man, it was quite a scene.  It took a gang of folks to get her up and to calm her down.

At first, we all thought that she was having some sort of anxiety attack, only to find out later that the truth was she had told the son to cut this woman loose a long time ago.  The woman had been a lady of ill-repute all her life and based on all accounts, had not changed at all.

An hour and a half later after the dust cleared, they finally got the momma to her seat.  Things settled down even, the couple finally made it to the altar — although there was one tense moment during the nuptials when the preacher said “if anyone objects to this marriage…”  You could hear a pin drop in the church.  All eyes were on the momma and not the happy couple.

The wedding was beautiful.  The ceremony was just as precious and you know what, the bride even wore white.   Not just any old white, but “PURE” white … as the driven snow.  Just goes to show you that one monkey don’t stop no show when you are determined.”  However, it made me think that I need to pay attention to the signs.  I know that I am doing the right thing today because my beautiful bride-to-be has gotten the blessing of my whole family and I can’t wait to marry her.  She is everything that I ever wanted and needed.  Wish we could skip the wedding though and go right to the bliss.  I hate formalities.

By the way, the happy couple I spoke about earlier (true story) were separated within months and are now unhappily divorced.  It seems that the bride’s old wicked ways finally caught up with her and the groom finally saw the writing on the walls – sad story indeed….
